Human traffickers slick Facebook ads revealed: How desperate migrants are conned into paying £2.5k for safe passage to Europe

A growing number of Facebook pages (pictured) are appearing online which claim to offer desperate Syrians and Iraqis a safe journey into mainland Europe for thousands of pounds in return. Passengers pay a hefty £2,500 per ticket but are told it is forbidden to bring any luggage or to wear headscarves because they must look like Western tourists. The men behind the Facebook page, who do not give their names, insist their boats are 100 per cent safe and suggest their customers carry digital cameras and laptops to help them look like tourists and evade capture. In reality, both routes could be deadly, as shown by the grim discovery of 71 migrants bodies in a lorry in Austria this week

Human traffickers advertise on Facebook: People smugglers cash in on desperate migrants by charging them thousands for a safe passage to Europe Webpages running offering refugees cross-border trips to other countries Ask for thousands in return but demand they leave all possessions behind Claim the journey is safe but migrants transported in lorries and boats Told to try and look like Western holidaymakers by carrying cameras to avoid capture

At a glance they appear to be glossy adverts for tourist trips.

But a closer look at advice for passengers – which bans luggage and women’s headscarves – reveals they are not really selling jaunts to London, Paris and Greece.

In fact they are among a growing number of Facebook pages which offer to smuggle desperate Syrians and Iraqis to mainland Europe for thousands of pounds.

This is one of a growing number of Facebook pages which offer to smuggle desperate Syrians and Iraqis to mainland Europe for thousands of pounds

The traffickers are seeking to cash in on the thousands of middle-class families who are willing to risk their life savings on the promise of a ‘safe’ passage.

But behind the promises of a new life, illustrated with pictures of the House of Parliament or the Eiffel Tower, lies the grim reality of people smuggling in 2015.

Thousands have died crossing the Mediterranean in unseaworthy craft this year, meaning the traffickers are now playing on families’ fears by offering expensive package deals which come with ‘100 per cent’ safety guarantees. One Facebook page, titled ‘Safe Journey from Turkey to Greece’, tells its would-be clients they will board a 130ft yacht in the Turkish port of Izmir. It carries a picture of the gleaming white Orient Bosphorus, its upper deck strung with fairy lights.

For those who do not want to risk a sea crossing, the site also offered a two-day route to Austria via lorry for £5,500 per person.

In reality, both routes could be deadly, as shown by the grim discovery of 71 migrants’ bodies in a lorry in Austria this week.

And in fact the ‘safe’ five-star yacht pictured on the site is also an illusion.

When the Daily Mail contacted the operators of the Orient Bosphorus, they said it was used only for romantic river cruises along the Bosphorus in Istanbul, and never went to Izmir, let alone across the Mediterranean.

Once in mainland Europe, many migrants plan to travel north to countries including Germany, Belgium and Sweden.

Meanwhile sites offering advice on how to get to the UK have attracted thousands of members.

One, called Migrating to London, had 10,276 members. Members were warned that the route to Britain had become more difficult. A blog linked to the group suggested migrants should try getting inside lorries parked near Calais, but warned against using those carrying frozen produce.

The motives of those hoping to travel appeared questionable.

At least one member of the ‘Smuggling from Calais to the UK’ group had the black flag of the so-called Islamic State as his profile picture.

For Syrians travelling without valid documents, various shady companies offered passports for sale, with prices starting at £650. Visas for European countries can cost thousands.

Migrants: Its worse than you think: Officially 53,000 Bulgarians and Romanians came here in a year...but we gave out 200,000 NI numbers

Immigration from Romania and Bulgaria may be four times as high as was thought, alarming figures have revealed.

Official statistics this week showed 53,000 Romanians and Bulgarians moved to Britain in a 12-month period.

But the number is dwarfed by separate figures showing more than 200,000 citizens from the two countries applied for National Insurance numbers, which are needed to work and claim benefits in Britain.

The number of Romanians and Bulgarians registering to work in Britain is four times higher than official migration figures claim, it emerged today

According to the Office for National Statistics 53,000 migrants from the EU 2 states moved to Britain last year

The massive discrepancy last night fuelled fears that the official measure of immigration may grossly understate the true number seeking a new life in Britain.

Senior Tories called for an urgent inquiry to establish exactly how many arrive each year from the two impoverished countries. And they warned new rules may be needed to limit the free movement from the EU if the higher figures are confirmed.

It came as 27 suspected illegal migrants were arrested after being found in a lorry at a motorway service station in Surrey.

Ministers were forced on to the back foot this week as it emerged annual net migration had soared to a record 330,000, making a mockery of David Cameron’s pledge to reduce it to the ‘tens of thousands’.

The figures were boosted by 53,000 arrivals in the year to March from Romania and Bulgaria, whose citizens have been allowed full work rights in the UK since January last year.

But this was dwarfed by the 214,000 applications from Romanians and Bulgarians for NI numbers. The two sets of figures are not directly comparable, as some applicants for NI numbers could already have been living here, and some are handed to temporary workers.

But the size of the discrepancy yesterday revived concerns that the International Passenger Survey used to compile the net immigration figures could be missing tens of thousands of people.

A three year boom in net migration has been fuelled by a steady fall in the number of people leaving the country and a huge increase in those arriving

Despite giving a no ifs no buts guarantee that net immigration would fall on his watch, David Cameron has overseen a huge increase since 2012

Lord Green, of the Migration Watch UK think-tank, said: ‘The difference between the numbers is quite extraordinary. It may be that some people have come in for relatively short periods, but even so the Government has questions to answer.’

Tory former Cabinet minister John Redwood said: ‘The Government needs to get to the bottom of this immediately, and ensure NI numbers are only given out to people who are legally entitled to be here.’

Labour MP Frank Field, co-chairman of the cross-party committee on balanced migration, said it was time to suspend the EU’s free movement rules. He added: ‘We know quite clearly that the current policy is bankrupt.’

The size of the discrepancy yesterday revived concerns that the International Passenger Survey used to compile the net immigration figures could be missing tens of thousands of people

But Stella Creasy, a leading candidate to be Labour’s deputy leader, said Britain had room for ‘many more’ migrants.

The International Passenger Survey is the main measure used to chart immigration. It proved disastrously inadequate to chart the influx of Poles and other Eastern Europeans into the UK in the mid-2000s. By contrast, National Insurance applications record the full total of real people who need numbers if they are to take legitimate jobs or claim state benefits.

The Government needs to get to the bottom of this immediately, and ensure NI numbers are only given out to people who are legally entitled to be here.
Former Tory Cabinet minister, John Redwood

Madeleine Sumption, director of the Oxford-based Migration Observatory, said: ‘The difference is likely to be related to short-term migration. People only appear in the International Passenger Survey as migrants if they are intending to come for more than 12 months.’

Romanians put in 170,000 applications for NI numbers in the year to the end of June, Department for Work and Pensions figures showed. Bulgarians applied for 44,000. The DWP said: ‘These figures are not a measure of when people arrived in the UK and do not take into account those who leave.’

But Office for National Statistics figures suggest only 4,000 migrants from the two countries went home in the year to the end of March. The 27 suspected illegal immigrants were found inside a lorry at Cobham Services on the M25, police said. The driver was also detained. Meanwhile the number of migrants crossing the Mediterranean to try to reach Europe has passed 300,000 this year, the UN refugee agency said.
