Video shows Chicago gorilla Binti Jua rescue child who fell into its enclosure

The incident involving Harambe has drawn parallels to a similar scenario 20 years ago when a female gorilla cradled a child who had fallen into its enclosure and carried him to safety. On that occasion, a three-year-old child had slipped 20ft into the gorilla enclosure at Chicagos Brookfield Zoo. An eight-year-old female gorilla named Binti Jua - whose name means daughter of sunshine - picked up the unconscious boy, while carrying her own infant [called Koola] on her back, and protected him from the other animals. In a remarkable show of maternal care, she cradled the child and carried him to an entrance where staff could safely reach him.

Binti Jua, now 28, is still living in the Brookfield Zoo gorilla exhibit, according to the website.

Koola gave birth to her own daughter, Nora, in August 2013 at the zoo.

The boy - who has never been identified - suffered a broken hand and cuts to his face and spent four days in hospital.

The video has come to light after the killing of male western lowland gorilla Harambe in Cincinnati zoo on Saturday sparked a backlash around the world.

Critics attacked the zoos actions and the apparent negligence of family members who failed to stop the boy.

The boy climbed the 3ft-tall barrier and crawled through the bushes before falling 15 feet (4.5 meters) into the enclosure.

Zoo director Thomas Maynard said the four-year-old child - who has not been named - was in imminent danger because the gorilla was confused and acting erratically.

Video footage showed the gorilla dragging the child by the ankle through the moat in its enclosure while terrified onlookers screamed.

But the clip also appeared to show Harambe standing guard over the child and the two even shared a brief moment holding hands.

Mr Maynard insisted the zoo had made the right decision and would do the same again.

He said: This child was being dragged around and his head was banging on the concrete. This was not a gentle thing.

We did not take the shooting lightly. But that childs life was in danger and people who question that, or are Monday morning quarterbacks or second guessers, dont understand that you cant take a risk with a silverback gorilla.

He said tranquilizing the prize ape was not an option because a dart could have startled the already-agitated creature, causing it to act aggressively before the sedative kicked in.

Comparing the contrasting behaviour of the two gorillas, wildlife biologist Jeff Corwin told MailOnline: There could be a number of factors involved. One thing you often find is different behaviour shown in a male as opposed to a female primate in affecting the way they react.

They can react different to something that is infantile, like a child. The gorilla is more like us than other animals and its very possible that the female gorilla in 1996 looked at the human child as a vulnerable infant that needed protection.

You see many many examples in primates of young adolescent females taking on the role of babysitter.

Every gorilla has its own personality. For example, when they are a teenager [Harambe was 17] they can be different from one thats older and more settled and confident.

Perhaps it is also significant that - during the incident in 1996 - the child was unconscious and therefore silent.

MOMENT APE SAVED A TINY BOY WHO FELL INTO A ZOO ENCLOSURE 30 YEARS AGO AT JERSEY ZOO

It was a story that gripped the nation - a five-year-old British boy who was knocked unconscious when he fell into a zoos gorilla enclosure and was touchingly protected by a giant male silverback named Jambo, who stood guard as the pack of apes circled.

Earlier this year, Levan Merritt shared his memories with MailOnline of that fateful day thirty years ago when iconic video footage of the incident made headlines around the world while at the Jersey Zoo, now known as Durrell Wildlife Park.

On August 30 1986, Merrit and his family took a trip to a trip to the island of Jersey in the English Channel for a family holiday.

During a family holiday, Levan Merritt slipped and fell 20ft down into the gorilla pit at a zoo located on the island of Jersey in the English Channel

While at the zoo, his father lifted his brother onto his shoulders to get a better look at the majestic animals, and Merritt decided to follow suit by clambering up the wall.

In the terrifying moment that followed, he slipped and fell 20 feet into the pit, snapping his arm and fracturing his skull in the process.

As he lay motionless on the ground, a 7ft tall 18 stone silverback male - called Jambo - slowly approached him.

As his family and a crowd of onlookers watched on in horror, Jambo reached out and gently stroked Levans back.

The gorilla stood guard over Levan when he was unconscious, placing himself between the boy and the other gorillas in a protective gesture.

After a nerve-jangling minute, Levan began to regain consciousness and started to cry.

As his family screamed at him to remain still, his sobs caused the gorillas to retreat in panic and Jambo led them into the house in the pen.

But when the gate was closing, a younger gorilla called Hobbit rushed out, at which point and an ambulanceman and two keepers stepped in and rescued Levan in a dramatic escape.

Rescuers then hauled Merritt up on a stretcher and he was airlifted to hospital.

Levans family screamed at him to remain still as he started to stir - his cries scared the gorillas away
