Messi put no filter on his emotions as he took in the previous days events on Monday morning.

The Portuguese struck a pose alongside team-mates Lucas Vazquez, Dani Ceballos, Nacho and Achraf Hakimi and included the caption: Great session this morning!!! Winning team.

While Ronaldo may be enjoying the bragging rights for now, he has now been banned for five matches - plus a £2,700 - for pushing referee Ricardo de Burgos Bergoetxea after being shown a second yellow for an apparent dive.

The Portuguese had been given his first warning only minutes earlier after removing his shirt to celebrate his goal and was then given his marching orders after going down under the challenge of Samuel Umtiti.

Article 96 of the rulebook applies to players who grab, push or shake a referee in a slightly violent manner and recommends a four to 12 game suspension for such offences.

Messi buried a penalty in the ill-tempered match to cancel out Gerard Piques own goal, but Barcelona again found themselves behind when Ronaldo came off the bench and fired in a stunning effort.

Barcelona looked set to get themselves back in the match after the FIFA Player of the Year was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for an apparent dive, but instead found themselves further behind by full time.

Marco Asensio was the man to give Real Madrid a commanding two-goal lead with another long-range effort in injury time, further enhancing his growing reputation as a new star under Zinedine Zidane.

It was also a bad start for new manager Ernesto Valverde, who could find himself under immediate pressure if Barcelona do not reclaim some respect in the second leg this Wednesday.

Barcelona should have the benefit of not having to face Ronaldo although Zidane did confirm that the club would try to appeal his star players second yellow card.

We played a great game but I am annoyed by Cristianos sending off, Zidane told a news conference.

Perhaps it wasnt a penalty but the red card is a little harsh. We cant change it, but well try and make sure he plays on Wednesday.
